The Caddisfly Project

Caddisflies are not just a favorite of fly fisherman. These tiny insects that spend most of their lives underwater are key indicators of stream health.
If caddisflies are present, along with other indicator species such as mayflies and stoneflies, a stream is most likely a healthy one. In fact, these critters have just been included in a new biodiversity index that will help researchers keep an eye on the health of streams and rivers.
Besides their ability to serve as an environmental warning bell, caddisflies display another gift. For when it comes to building submersible homes able to withstand powerful forces, few animals are as diverse an architect as the caddisfly.
This project documents the home-building talents of caddisflies, and offers a rare glimpse at the complexity of a creature that many may not otherwise notice.
